The Moscow Canal links the Moscow River to the Volga River.Construction began in 1932 and was completed in 1937, connecting the capital city, Moscow, to five seas: the White Sea, Baltic Sea, Caspian Sea, Sea of Azov, and Black Sea. This ambitious project not only strengthened Russia’s military and economic capabilities but also enhanced the central government's ability to allocate national resources, enabling Russia to catch up with other maritime powers.

With the completion of the Moscow Canal, Moscow became known as the "Port of Five Seas," significantly boosting the city's development. Beyond its vital role in transportation, the canal supplies nearly half of Moscow’s water. Along its banks, numerous recreational facilities have been established, adding vibrancy to the city’s rich cultural landscape.
