Markets across the Pacific region experienced a strong rebound last week. The MSCI Pacific ex Japan index rose 4.7% in USD but 3.8% in local currency terms. Exporters such as Samsung Electronics (+6.2%), TSMC (+3.2%) and Yue Yuen (+5.2%) led the gains. Raw material stocks rose, following metals prices higher. BHP
Billiton, Rio Tinto Group, and Jiangxi Copper gained 5.2%, 1.6% and 13%, respectively. Mirroring similar gains in crude prices, Woodside Petroleum and PetrolChina made respective gains of 5.8% and 8.5%. Taiwan, which had been racked by political instability, also performed particularly well, with the TWSI up 3.9% as President Chen Shui-bian survived a bid to oust him. The stock rally came even as Taiwan's central bank last Thursday lifted its policy interest rate by 0.125% to 2.5%, the highest in almost 5 years.

Korean stocks rose from last week's heavy falls, as investors became more optimistic about the prospects for first-quarter corporate earnings. The KOSPI benchmark index (+5.4%) finished the week at its highest level since November. India's SENSEX (+2.0%) rose for the third week in a row amid volatile trading. Investors turned to be more selective with fundamentally strong stocks closing sharply higher. Gains by four stocks, namely RIL, ITC, Infosys and Wipro, contributed 71% of the total gain delivered by the SENSEX. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 2.9%. Despite the US interest rate hike last Thursday Hong Kong's major banks decided to hold their benchmark lending rates steady, partly reflecting ample liquidity within the local banking system. Also in buoyancy were China's A shares (+4.2%). Last Sunday the China Securities Regulatory Commission issued regulations allowing investors to buy stocks on margin and to sell borrowed shares, moves aimed at tapping the nation's USD4tn of bank deposits and boosting trading, as well as paving the way for the eventual introduction of short-selling on mainland exchanges.
