The Lunar New Year's Day

The vernal breeze brings us warm wine and a warm spring day.

千门万户曈曈日，

The rising sun sheds light on doors of each household,

New peach wood charms are put up to replace the old.

守岁

Staying up All Night on New Year’s Eve

欲知垂尽岁，有似赴壑蛇。

The end of the year is drawing near

As a snake crawls back to its hole.

修鳞半已没，去意谁能遮。

We see half its body disappear

And soon we’ll lose sight of the whole.

况欲系其尾，虽勤知奈何。

If we try to tie down its tail,

We can’t succeed whate’er we do.

儿童强不睡，相守夜欢哗。

Children will stay up and regale

Themselves with feast the whole night through.

晨鸡且勿唱，更鼓畏添挝。

Cocks, wake not the dawn with your song;

Drums, do not boom out the hour now!

坐久灯烬落，起看北斗斜。

The wick is burned as I sit long,

I rise to see the slanting Plough.

明年岂无年，心事恐蹉跎。

Will these be no New Year’s Eve next year?

I am afraid time waits for none.

努力尽今夕，少年犹可夸。

Let us enjoy tonight with cheer

So that childhood will longer run.

田家元日

Farmer’s New Year

昨夜斗北回，今朝岁起东。

Last night the Plough’s to east from north,

A New Year’s Morn would give a birth.

我年已强壮，无禄尚忧农。

My age turns old and body strong though,

I still worry on crops with official post no.

桑野就耕父，荷锄随牧童。

In mulberry field I plough as a farmer old,

And there with shepherd boy I carry hoe.

田家占气候，共说此年丰。

Doing weather forecast with all folks here, 

Together we predict this a new harvest year.
