Pharmaron Holds Eleventh Annual Symposium on Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry
Pharmaron held its 11th Symposium on Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry on the 21st September, 2024, in Beijing, China. This symposium offers an opportunity for our scientists and partners to learn from some world-class industry and academic researchers that presented the latest advancements in synthetic and medicinal chemistry. The goal of this symposium is to spark innovation, as that is the foundation of Pharmaron's learning culture and building block for continued success.
The topics presented in this Symposium covered broadly:
1) Professor Frank Glorius, Universität Münster, Germany, opened the Symposium with “On data, Discovery & Sensitivity in (Photo)Catalysis”, with a focus on “how to discover” in the scientific process, demonstrated with smart screening strategies and machine learning.
2) Dr. Ji Qi, MSD, China, described MSD’s creative platform of “N-C Continuous Peptide Elongation with Free Amino Acids” at a manufacturing scale, as inspired by the high efficiency of natural biosynthesis of peptides/proteins and the large scale of chemical synthesis.
3) Professor Feng-Ling Qing, SIOC, China, discussed on “My Journey for Aryl Trifluoromethyl Ethers”, exemplified by novel strategies and methoddolgies of introducing CF3O to arenes or CF2(X=Br/Cl) to phenols.
4) Dr. Ian Storer, AstraZeneca, UK, showcased AZ’s innovation in “Development, Application and Evolution of a Covalent Drug Discovery Platform”, as guided by AZ’s new 5R for lead generation to address traditionally undruggable targets.
5) Dr. Keiichi Masuya, PeptiDream, Japan, discussed on “The Epicenter of Peptide Drug Discovery” developed at PeptiDream, featuring macrocyclic peptides and peptide-drug conjugates (PDCs) to address issues from other modalities.
6) Mr. Chris Thomas, Pharmaron, UK, disclosed the medicinal chemistry path to “The Discovery of HC-7366: An Orally Bioavailable and Efficient GCN2 Kinase Activator”, in a collaboration between HiberCell and Pharmaron, which has successfully entered into phase 1b clinical trial.
7) Professor John L. Wood, Baylor University, USA, shared with the audience his group’s “Recent Efforts in the Synthesis of Complex Natural Products”, as exemplified by the total synthesis of rac-Aleutianaminein a convergent manner, showing the power of perseverance.
Over one thousand chemists from Pharmaron participated in this event. The high level of scientific and technological novelties embodied in the talks stimulated great discussions among the speakers and symposium attendees. Some of the discoveries and novel technologies disclosed here could have profound impact on chemical and biological sciences and the way we conduct drug discovery and development in the future. Many new ideas around the talks were also created and discussed with great enthusiasm in the Symposium. We all look forward to the Symposium in 2025!
