Panasonic maker Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. said on Friday it will sell its cathode ray tube (CRT) business in Germany to two investment firms to boost operational efficiency.

CRTs are used in conventional television sets.

Matsushita will sell 96 percent of the German unit, which has a capacity to make 1.5 million CRTs a year, to Dutch-based investment firm Here Genesis BV, with the remainder sold to another investment company set up by the unit's executives.

Matsushita, the world's largest plasma TV maker, declined to disclose the selling price, but said it has no plan to revise its earnings forecast as a result of the deal.

The subsidiary ceased operations in March 2006. It still has land and factory buildings although production equipment has already been taken away.

Shares in Matsushita closed up 1.5 percent at 2,445 yen ahead of the announcement.
