　　Rio Tinto， the UK-listed mining group， yesterday dealt what looked like a knockout blow in the battle for control of Alcan， the Canadian aluminium group， with a $38bn all-cash friendly deal， valuing the company at $44bn including debt.

　　Rio Tinto's offer of $101 a share for Alcan trumps an earlier hostile bid from Alcoa of the US. The bid represents a 32.8 per cent premium to Alcoa's cash and shares offer and is 65 per cent above the Canadian group's record closing price in May before the Alcoa bid was made.

　　The bid is likely to be funded through debt and asset disposals thought to be worth up to $10bn.
