Reliance Communications is in talks to team up with three US private equity groups trying to buy the Indian mobile phone operations of Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing's Hutchison Telecommunications International in a deal thought to be worth more than $14bn.

Such a deal would see Reliance, which is headed by Anil Ambani, catapulted into the number one position in the fast-growing Indian mobile market.

Reliance is estimated to have 21 per cent of the country's mobile subscribers. Hutchison Essar, a joint venture between Mr Li's Hutchison and India's Essar, serves about 17 per cent while market leader Bharti Airtel has about 23 per cent of subscribers.

  Reliance Communications
