  China Will Take World Leadership

  by Reversing Climate Change

  @ CDF TALK

Hi! My name is Henk Rogers. A little bit of background. I‘m originally born in the Netherlands, lived there for 8 years, 8 years in New York City, and then I moved to Hawaii when I was 18.

Hawaii. What a paradise! How many of you have been to Hawaii? All right.

So when I was 18, I moved from a city like Beijing because New York was like Beijing when I was 18. Many people, lots of pollution.

To Hawaii which has blue skies and clear ocean and nice to surf and nice to dive. It was paradise. That‘s how I remember Hawaii.

I ended up going to the University of Hawaii.

I studied Computer Science and I minored in Dungeon & Dragons.

And six years later I found myself in Japan. I chased a girl in Japan. She‘s now my wife. I chased the girl in Japan, and I started my first company. My first company was a computer game company. So if you go back in time. I’m old enough so that my first game that I created on the personal computer came out in cassette tape. Does anybody here know what a cassette tape is? All right.

That was my first game. So I wrote the first role-playing game in Japan, long long time ago. And I found myself with a publishing company, publishing computer games in Japan.

Well, a few years into it, I started traveling around the world and looking for games to bring to Japan. And the game that I found, which all of you must know, is Tetris.

How many of you have played Tetris? Come on. It must be more than that. Okay, there you are. That‘s better.

Yeah, I know this got a different name in China. It‘s Russian block game? Something like that. Yes.

So that started my career of making money. A few years later, I found myself looking for to start the next business. And it was when in Japan games on mobile phones started to become a huge hit. I found a company in Japan that licensed Tetris for me for a huge amount of money.

And I tried to find a company in the U.S. to license Tetris too. And I could only get a small amount of money. So I thought, oh, everybody in the United States doesn‘t understand what’s going to happen. So I started the company myself.

And three years later I sold that company for a lot of money. So I made a deal with my wife. I said, if I put this much money away, I don‘t have to work anymore.

Right? That was my agreement. Well, I put this much money away, so she can‘t say I have to go back to work.

Well, anyway, months later after I sold the company, I found myself in the back of an ambulance on the way to a hospital with a hundred percent blockage of the widow maker.

I was lucky. If I was anywhere except Honolulu, if I wasn‘t on the big island that day, I would have died because it’s the largest artery of your heart, and it was completely blocked.

So I was in the back of the ambulance and I‘m looking at the ceiling going. You’ve got to be kidding me. I haven‘t spent any of the money yet. That was the first thing I thought. And the second thing I thought was, no, I’m not going. I still have stuff to do.

So I‘m in the recovery room and I’m thinking, so what do I mean by stuff?

You know, I already made enough money, so my wife doesn‘t need me anymore. My children already finished school, so they don’t need me anymore. So what do I mean by stuff?

I‘ve pretty much done everything that I was thinking that I need to do in my life. So I thought about it. How do I figure out what do I need to do? So I thought about the end of my life and what was going to upset me if I didn’t fix it, or if I didn‘t do something about it by the end of my life. So I went to search for my missions in life.

And the first mission came to me in the back of the newspaper. I was reading the newspaper in the recovery room, in the back of the newspaper. Small article said, oh, by the way, we‘re going to kill all the coral in the world by the end of the century. And I thought that’s the dumbest thing I‘ve ever heard. Why are we allowed to kill all the coral in the world? What does that mean?

So I read more about it and found out more about it. It‘s carbon dioxide going into the ocean, causing ocean acidification.

I thought, well, that‘s a simple one. We should just stop making carbon dioxide.

What makes carbon dioxide? Well, it‘s coal, oil, gas. It’s fossil fuel and we‘re producing huge amounts of it. And so we weren’t just gonna stop doing that.

And as I looked into it, I found out there‘s so much more damage being done by the carbon dioxide besides killing the coral. It’s causing climate change.

And we can see the results of climate change every day now. We see the hurricane that just hit the Bahamas. I don‘t know how many Category 5 hurricanes we’ve had in the last few years, even though President Trump doesn‘t know what a Category 5 hurricane is. They exist and they are hitting us very often. We have fires. We have fires in California, in the Amazon. We have droughts. We have massive rain.

Things are gonna change, and things are changing a lot faster and a lot worse than we ever imagined that they would.

So anyway, I‘m going to do something about this. So I’m gonna start a foundation that is gonna stop the use of carbon-based fuel. Easy, right? Right.

So I live in Hawaii. And I thought, okay, first I have to do it in Hawaii because Hawaii is my home. And before I can ask other people in other places to clean up their room, I must clean up my own room.

And I remember meeting with the governor of Hawaii at the time, and she said to me, Henk, you are computer game guy, you don‘t know anything about this. You have any idea what you’re talking about?

And I said, no, I don‘t know anything today, but I will know something tomorrow.

Well, many years later, actually I‘m going to play a video. My little niece explains it better than I can. So this is the Blue Planet Foundation.

Hawaii is our home. But our home is changing? Breaking news on Kuwait tonight. Devastating flooding. Widespread damage. Homes on the verge are collapsing.

The world is changing. The largest wildfire in the state of California. Tonight, the rain is over, but the disaster is not.

I worry sometimes when I think about my future. What will it be like when I grow up? Would it be like what my parents remember?

Climate change scares me. But we know that it doesn‘t have to be this way.

We can change. That‘s why I’m grateful for Blue Planet Foundation. For the past ten years, Blue Planet has been leading the way for clean energy. They think if we can do it in Hawaii, we can show the entire world what a clean energy future looks like.

They brought together hundreds of students just like me to be a part of the change.

When! Now! When! Now! All right now! Everybody get your sides! Everyone get together! Make your voice heard! Make your future happen!

They joined their families and neighbors to draw the line on climate change.

Our voices really matter. Us being here today is showing something and showcasing to the world that we really care about this issue. And we want to take a stance.

And in 2015, their efforts paid off, when Hawaii passed our country‘s first 100% renewable energy. It’s nice to know when I grow up all our energy will come from clean sources.

And now Blue Planet is growing. Their Re:Power project is working to bring Hawaii‘s one hundred percent renewable energy law to other states.

Now Blue Planet is active every day making this change happen. They are in our classrooms and in our communities. We still have a long way to go. We have a lot of work to do.

I‘m excited about the new future we are creating. We can help solve our climate crisis, starting in Hawaii, and we will inspire the world, but we can’t do it alone.

Will you help? For my future.

Neah is seven years old. She spent eight hours practicing to narrate this video.

She‘s my niece. I think everybody has a seven-year-old niece that needs protection in the future.

So the big achievement, I would say. I mean we‘ve done many many things in Hawaii but our biggest achievement is a mandate. The mandate is that Hawaii will become 100% renewable for electricity generation before the year 2045.

Why we were negotiating with the politicians? The lobbyists from the utility, from the electric company on the other side were saying, “No, we can‘t do this. It’s too difficult.” And they said 2050. We were fighting for 2040, and we settled in 2045.

And it was interesting because a few months later, the electric company they said they actually looked at it and they said “We figured it out. We can actually do this and we can do it by 2040.”

Now there are 1.5 million people in Hawaii, and we did the calculation that would save the people of Hawaii, the rate payers, seven billion dollars.

It would be seven billion dollars cheaper for the people of Hawaii to go to 100% renewable by 2040. And since then, we‘ve even passed more legislation. We’ve changed the business model for the electric company. The traditional business model has been that the electric company makes ten percent on top of the price of oil.

Hawaii spends five billion dollars a year on oil. Just to give you an idea. Thirty percent goes to jet fuel, thirty percent goes to ground transportation, and forty percent goes to make electricity. I think every island has the same problem.

So now we changed their business model.

And the new business model is we give you more profit, the quickly you change to renewable energy.

Ok, so right now we pay 32 cents per kilowatt for electricity, say 4 cents is profit for the electric company. The cost of renewable is 8 cents, so we give you 5 cents. That means they‘re making 25% more money, and we’re paying half.

This is the story of renewable energy.

We know renewable energy, wind and solar are free. All you have to do is building the infrastructure. In the case of coal, oil and gas, you build the infrastructure, and then you keep on having to buy more and more and more. Not only that, but after you buy more and you turn it into carbon dioxide, you have to pay more when you have adverse weather events, when you have fires, when you have disasters, when you have sea level rise.

What happens when we have a ten-meter rise in sea level? For example, if the ice in Greenland melts. What happens to Shanghai? What happens to New York? What happens to London and Paris? All these places are underwater.

Which do you think is cheaper for us to stop climate change or to rebuild all of those cities?

The result of us having the success in Hawaii has been that other states in the country have been also going to have the same mandate. California has 2045. We asked them, why did you choose 2045? And they said “You did 2045. Isn‘t that the date?” No, it’s a date that we negotiated.

That‘s okay. As long as you have a date, a deadline to work towards, then everybody in your jurisdiction can start to think, how can we achieve this deadline. And once they start to think, that’s the important part.

First think. And by the way, I always tell leaders this “Don‘t ask anybody about how to do it” Because they don’t know. Tell them that they have to do it, and they have to figure it out.

When you think about it, in World War II, we went from biplanes that planes with two wings to jet planes. We invented missiles. We invented cruise missiles. We invented sonar radar. We invented the atom bomb in five years using 1940s technologies.

In five years. If we wanted to, we could stop climate change in five years.

President Roosevelt called in the leaders of Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler. And he said “I need tanks. I need planes. I need war materials. What can you do for me? ” And they came back and they said “We can give you twenty percent of our production.” He said “I have a better idea. You give me a hundred percent of your production. Not another car was built in the U.S. in the next five years.

Why are we still building internal combustion engine cars? It makes no sense at all. So the climate crisis is World War III. It is an existential threat. It is as much of a threat as Nazism or imperialism, all the things that we died for in World War II. This is much bigger than that. It doesn‘t just affect a few people. It affects everybody. And we still haven’t woken up to this fact.

Well, just like in World War II, we all have to get together and we have to join together and we have to ally to win this war. And who can be the leader in this next war? I believe that China is the leader of this next war.

Just like the U.S. started building planes and tanks and ships during World War II, China is building solar panels and wind and solar, all of that stuff. You can build it now.

Instead of exporting coal fired power plants, you can export solar farms and wind farms. Along with your Belt and Road you can export renewable energy.

I need China to make a statement. You know, right now we have a president in my adopted country who doesn‘t understand about climate change. Maybe you could say that he’s not educated, or maybe he‘s educated, he’s evil. There are lots of different explanations.

But I believe that your leader is not only educated, but he‘s not evil. And so I think you have an opportunity for China to say we are going to do this.

You‘re gonna set a date, a mandate. Mandate -you can say 2045. I like 2045 because it just so happens to be the hundredth anniversary of the United Nations. What better outcome for the United Nations than to have stopped climate change by 2045, its hundredth anniversary.

And what better outcome for China than to be the leader of this new world, which is going to be a world where humans live in harmony with nature.

By the way, climate change isn‘t the only problem. Climate change is the first one and the big one, but we cannot continue to put garbage in the ocean or garbage in the ground or any kind of garbage in the air.

If we do that, it will come to bite us just like climate change, just like carbon dioxide is biting us now.

So my reason for being in China today is to invite China to become the leader to stop climate change. We need a leader. This can be China‘s moment in history.

  Thank you very much.
