皂素（亦称皂甙元）是由黄姜提取生物医药工业甾体重要的基础原料，也是国防、化工等领域重要的中间体原料。以皂素原料，利用化学合成或生物合成技术，已成功的开发出肾上腺皮质激素、性激素和孕激素三大类二百多项两千多种国计民生特需的甾体激素药物,如双烯醇酮醋酸脂（简称双烯）、黄体酮（孕酮）、醋酸孕酮（单脂）、强的松、可的松系列
以及催产素、避孕药等，还可用作抗肿瘤剂、肮巩膜剂、青霉素添加剂、狂犬菌释剂及头发生长促进剂等。由于皂素特殊的医药价值，皂素被国际医药界誉为“激素之母”的称号，产品供不应求，畅销国际市场。近年来，随着我国生物医药科技的发展，国内医药市场皂素需求量大幅度增加，据不完全统计，我国皂素缺口近四千吨，世界皂素市场严重供不应求。因而，国际医药界将二十世纪称之为“百年黄姜、百年皂素”的时代。二、项目总投资
