Southwest Chinas Yunnan Province handled US$2.5 billion inbordertrade during the first six months this year, a 25.4 percentriseover the same period of 2003, according to local customs.Thetotalincluded US$1.1 billion in imports, up 30 percentyear-on-year, andUS$1.4 billion in exports, up 21.7percent.Neighboring Myanmar,Thailand, Vietnam and Laos, Yunnanboasts over 4,000 kilometers ofborder line and in recent years,border trade has become animportant driving force for thepr
ovinces economicdevelopment.Statistics from the customs showedprivate businesseshave replaced State-owned enterprises to becomethe largestcontributor to Yunnans border trade. They contributedUS$1.1billion to the provinces border trade, accounting for 45.5percentof the total.In addition, among all the border tradepartners ofYunnan, Vietnam reported the highest growth rate of 37percent andthe countrys metal ores, especially iron ore, havebecome very hotin Yunnan.Textile, ffin, fruit and vegetable ledother exportcommodities in Yunnan and the major import items arestill lumber,metal ore and rubber.(Xinhua)
