LONDON, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Nickel futures on the London

Metal exchange fell on Wednesday as investors took profits from

this week's record high prices, but the metal was poised to make

  new highs, dealers said.

Nickel for sale in three months fell $29,500/29,700 a

tonne by 0803 GMT, compared with its previous close at $29,700

and Monday's record high of $30,250.

"Nickel is down because of profit taking but the market

remains very tight," said a metals trader in London.

"Another record high is quite likely in the near term. Only

a very brave person would want to short the nickel market with

so much tightness approaching," he added.

Stocks at LME registered warehouses are currently at 4,020

tonnes, around a day of global consumption.

Standard Bank said in a report it had taken a bullish view

for the market for the remainder of 2006 and 2007, seeing the

fundamental outlook for the market as remarkably strong.

"This should also serve to keep a solid level of speculative

and investment fund interest in the market, exacerbating price

swings in what promises to be a volatile year for nickel in

  2007," the report said.

Copper futures also fell, with three-month futures

trading at $7,415 a tonne, compared with Tuesday's close of

$7,430. Copper stocks deliverable to the LME fell 125 tonnes to

  113,900 tonnes.

The London trader said that market participants made

repeated attempts to test the upside, but failed. The upside

momentum appeared to have slowed, he added.

In Shanghai, most-active copper contract, December, ended

the morning session down 0.5 percent at 69,460 yuan ($8,873) a

  tonne in thin trading.

Shanghai traders have hesitantly rolled positions to

December, now the most-active month in Shanghai. November

volumes had stayed relatively high for longer than usual, as

traders were reluctant to commit to positions in a market that

  has been rangebound since July.
